Morphology
- Stem
- 1, usually erect, round, proximally glabrous, strigose in inflorescence.
- Leaves
- Basal and cauline taper abruptly to winged petioles; blades broadly ovate, 4 to 12 inches long, 1 to 4 inches wide, margins sharply toothed, tips acute to acuminate, upper surface glabrous or slightly rough, sometimes minutely strigose; mid to upper cauline sessile, lanceolate, 2 to 3 inches long, 2/5 to 3/5 inch wide, margins becoming entire, reduced in size above.
- Inflorescence
- Panicle-like arrays, open, leafy, branches sometimes recurved, elongate, pubescent; peduncles pubescent; phyllaries in 3-4 series, unequal, outer ovate, inner linear-oblong, tips obtuse.
- Flower
- Ray florets 2-8, yellow, ca. 1/6 inch; disc florets 8-20, yellow, tubular, 1/8 to 1/6 inch.
- Fruit
- Achenes, tiny, ridged; pappus of outer scales and inner white bristles, ca. 1/8 inch.
