Morphology

Stem
Erect, branched distally, hispid below, stipitate-glandular above.
Leaves
Cauline, opposite proximally, alternate distally; blades lanceolate, 1.2 to 3.6 inches long, .12 to .8 inch wide; margins entire, surfaces scabrous to strigose or puberulent.
Inflorescence
Heads in corymb-like arrays; involucres turbinate; phyllaries 8-14 in 2-3 series, distinct, oblanceolate to linear, .35 to .5 inch long.
Flower
Ray florets 3-5; corolla pink to pale purple, .6 to 1 inch, ligule .2 to .5 inch. Disk florets 15-35; corolla pink to pale purple, .4 to .6 inch, funnelform, lobes 5.
Fruit
Achenes, obpyramidal, .24 to .35 inch, 4-angled, puberulent; pappus scales 4-10, .28 to .35 inch.

Ecology

Habitat
Sand and sandsage prairies, sandy mixed-grass prairies, sand dunes, flood plains, dry river and stream beds.
