Morphology
- Stem
- Erect, slender, single, simple below, branched above middle, glandular-hairy.
- Leaves
- Alternate, simple, sessile, oblanceolate to spatulate, 1.5 to 2.75 inches long, 1/5 to 2/5 inch wide, sparsely hairy near bases; margins entire to irregularly toothed.
- Inflorescence
- Open panicles of heads on long, bristly-hairy stalks; heads less than 1 inch wide; bracts narrowly lanceolate, overlapping in several series, short glandular-hairy.
- Flower
- Ray florets mostly 13-21, less than 1/2 inch long, yellow; disk florets numerous, yellow, corolla tubes separated into 5 lateral sections by dark reddish brown lines.
- Fruit
- Achenes, triangular, less than 1/10 inch long, slightly flattened, silky hairy, tipped with numerous white bristles, enclosing small seed.
