Morphology
- Stem
- Stems absent or essentially so. Plants green, glabrous or glabrate.
- Leaves
- Basal; petiole bases winged, often purplish; blades lanceolate to broadly ovate, 1.6 to 9 inches long, .8 to 6 inches wide, margins entire to undulate or coarsely dentate, tip acute or rounded.
- Inflorescence
- Terminal spikes, long-cylindric, 2 to 14 inches; bracts lanceolate, 1 to 1.3 times as long as calyx; peduncles glabrous or glabrate.
- Flower
- Calyx 4-lobed, lobes ovate to oblong, .06 to .08 inch, margins broadly membranous, somewhat translucent; corolla semi-transparent but sometimes appearing white, tubular, 4-lobed, lobes less than .05 inch, reflexed; stamens 4.
- Fruit
- Capsules lanceoloid, 1/8 to 2/5 inch; seeds 4 to 9, black, elliptic, ca. 1/12 inch.
