Morphology

Stem
Flowering stalk slender, erect, leafless, pubescent.
Leaves
Basal, simple, variable, oblanceolate, 2-6 inches long, loosely pubescent; margins entire or toothed to deeply cleft.
Inflorescence
Heads, solitary, spherical, 3/4 to 1 inch wide, terminal.
Flower
Bracts ovate-lanceolate; ray florets absent, rarely few, inconspicuous, brownish; disk florets reddish brown, interspersed with numerous stiff bristles.
Fruit
Achenes, small, long-hairy, tipped with 6-10 ovate-lanceolate, awned scales, enclosing small seed.

Ecology

Habitat
Open, dry, rocky sites on sandy or gypsum soils.
Distribution
South-central and north-central Kansas.
