Also Called: Fragrant gaillardia, pincushion daisy.
Stems: Flowering stalk slender, erect, leafless, pubescent.
Leaves: Basal, simple, variable, oblanceolate, 2-6 inches long, loosely pubescent; margins entire or toothed to deeply cleft.
Inflorescences: Heads, solitary, spherical, 3/4 to 1 inch wide, terminal.
Flowers: Bracts ovate-lanceolate; ray florets absent, rarely few, inconspicuous, brownish; disk florets reddish brown, interspersed with numerous stiff bristles.
Fruits: Achenes, small, long-hairy, tipped with 6-10 ovate-lanceolate, awned scales, enclosing small seed.
Habitat: Open, dry, rocky sites on sandy or gypsum soils.
Distribution: South-central and north-central Kansas.
Comments: Rayless gaillardia has a sweet fragrance.
