Also Called: Light poppy mallow, pink poppy mallow.
Stems: Erect, slender, few to several, branched from bases, stiff hairy or sometimes glabrous.
Leaves: Alternate, slender-stalked, triangular to ovate, 1 to 4 inches long, 1 to 3 inches wide, incised or palmately 5 to 7-divided, basal leaves less deeply lobed.
Inflorescences: Solitary or small clusters of flowers, terminal, on stalks to 4 inches long, stalks often bent above middle.
Flowers: Calyces 5-parted, lobes triangular to lanceolate, 3-nerved; tips pointed; corollas pale pink or white, .75 to 1.75 inch wide; petals 5, .5 to 1 inch long, overlapping somewhat; tips often fringed; stamens numerous, united into column.
Fruits: Rings of 10-15 beaked, 1-seeded segments; seeds tiny, smooth, dark.
Habitat: Dry rocky or sandy sites.
Distribution: Principally east half of Kansas.
Uses: The root is edible.
